Modeling and Analysis of Part Connections with PERMAS

For the computation of complex assemblies part connection modelling plays an important role. The comfortable handling and a good physical representation are conflicting goals, to be addressed by the features available in PERMAS. Comfortable functions that are configurable by parameters are offered.

Component couplings via incompatible couplings enable efficient modelling. This coupling method for surfaces and edges has a long tradition in PERMAS. Due to its high accuracy and many options, this method can be used anywhere.
  • The most important points about the incompatible coupling:
    • Raising productivity in finite element modelling,
    • mesh-independent modelling,
    • faster exchange of parts by keeping other already meshed parts unchanged,
    • more flexible modelling by partoriented meshing,
    • improved mesh quality by accurate mesh transitions,
    • suitable for large rotations by considering the distances,
    • global or local directions can be coupled.

Contact analysis with PERMAS
Static deformations are calculated under various loads with linear and nonlinear material behavior:
  • Contact analysis:
    • many contacts possible (>>30,000),
    • unrivaled short run times,
    • most advanced solver technology,
    • friction can be taken into account with transitions between sticking and sliding,
    • bolt conditions can be applied in one step,
    • specification of a realistic loading history,
    • contact results: contact pressure, contact status, contact forces, saturation, etc.

For the modeling of bolts, especially the preload, the appropriate methods are available in PERMAS for every level of detail.
The procedures range from modeling with beams, with exact prestension forces, to detailed thread modeling in order to carry out evaluations directly on the screw.
Advanced methods simplify input via parameters and lead to efficient modeling with high accuracy.
In addition to the non-linear methods, there are even linear formulations for the prestress in order to take them into account in purely linear calculations.

The simulation of bolt loosening is very demanding. The diverse requirements, high accuracy, parameterized input, simple modelling, different levels of detail and short computing times can be solved excellently by PERMAS. We are happy to share further details:
